An octopus fisherman in the Mafia Island Marine Park. In the 2003 fisheries census of the 11 villages within the Marine Park there were 498 octopus fishermen registered. Using traditional methods local community members can harvest octopus (Octopus cyanea) and other marine species within Mafia Island Marine Park. The park thrives thanks to the development of sustainable livelihoods in the 11 villages within its boundaries.
